Roof Covering
Why:
When compared to asphalt, fiberglass or wood Shingles, roof coverings such as Tile (Concrete, Clay, etc.) and Slate (see illustrations below), increase the wind resistance of the roof because the additional weight helps to hold the roof down.
What to do:
Consider replacing old asphalt or fiberglass shingles with Tile or one of the heavier roof coverings. Tile, etc., can last up to three times longer than shingles so upgrading could reduce your long term maintenance costs.
How:
If you are planning to replace your roof covering in the near future, have your licensed roofing contractor inspect the roof structure and determine if the framing is suitable for the additional weight. If it is, have the contractor provide a quotation for alternate roof coverings so you can compare the prices and make a decision on the best roof covering for your home. Whatever roof covering material you select, be sure the contractor installs it in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations for high wind installations.
