Superior Roof Sheathing Attachment

Why:

Keeping the roof sheathing (i.e., the wood deck under the roof covering)* in place during a hurricane is one of the most effective methods of reducing hurricane losses. Wind forces acting on the roof are capable of lifting the roof sheathing off and exposing the interior of your home to severe wind and water damage.

What to do:

During construction or when re-roofing, the roof deck should be nailed with 8d (penny) or larger nails in accordance with the Building Code required nailing pattern. The ability of 8d nails to resist wind uplift forces is approximately twice that of the 6d nails; while 10d nails offer approximately four times the wind uplift resistance of 6d nails. The use of 2" number 8 wood screws (Quick-Drive or equivalent) in addition to code required nails could significantly increase overall uplift resistance of the roof deck.

The application of a Foamed Polyurethane Sheathing Adhesive or an AFG-01 structural adhesive, applied per the manufacturer’s instructions, has also been shown to significantly increase the resistance to wind uplift of the roof sheathing. Application of the adhesive is accomplished from INSIDE THE ATTIC and does not require the removal of the roof covering.

How:

If you are planning to replace your roof covering in the near future, have your roofing contractor re-nail the roof deck with 8d or 10d nails. (The use of ring-shank nails provides more uplift resistance than smooth shank nails; or 2" number 8 wood screws can be used).

If you are not planning to replace your roof covering in the near future, you can install construction adhesives to strengthen the roof assembly. The application of an AFG-01 structural adhesive, per the manufacturer’s instructions, will help the roof sheathing withstand wind uplift forces. The adhesive must be applied to both sides of each truss/rafter with a ¼" or greater bead between the sheathing and each truss/rafter, and over the entire length of each truss/rafter and its connection with the sheathing to within a foot of the roof overhang.
